GB para table tennis squad heads to France: Final warm-up before World Championships

The Great Britain para table tennis team has announced a 12-player squad for the ITTF World Para Elite Yvelines in France, September 12–16, as their final preparation step before the World Para Championships in Thailand this November. Interim Performance Director Shaun Marples emphasized the event's importance for ranking and seeding improvement. The squad includes world champion Will Bayley (class 7) and European champion Rob Davies (class 1), alongside emerging talents like Bly Twomey (class 7) and Billy Shilton (class 8). While the article from Table Tennis England is a routine press release with no detailed technical analysis, deeper examination reveals risks such as over-reliance on veteran stars, potential injuries in the final build-up, and the interim leadership structure. The event offers valuable match practice but carries moderate competitive risk. This story provides lessons for developing para programs, including Vietnam's, on how top teams manage preparation and risk.
